The fan racially abused the Brazilian player and his punishment by National Sports Council of Spain has been made known. The National Sports Council of Spain has proposed a €4,000 fine as well as a 12-month ban from entering sports stadiums for a fan that was found guilty of racially abusing Real Madrid winger, Vinicius Junior, in a game on 5 February 2023. Reports say that  the fan is a season ticket holder at Mallorca who is just 20-years-old  and has no previous criminal record. The incident, which is being classed as  a hate crime, occurred when Real Madrid travelled to Son Moix Stadium on the Balearic Island of Mallorca.  Local police found the man weeks ago but a meeting was not held until Tuesday 28 February, in which his punishment was decided upon. Why are Barcelona fans called ‘Culés’ and Real Madrid fans ‘Vikings’?

Image
We often hear supporters of Los Blancos refer to themselves as ‘Vikingos’ and Barça fans declaring themselves ‘Culés’, but where did those names originate? Spanish football fans have grown up referring to  FC Barcelona fans as  Culés  and Real Madrid supporters as  Vikingos  - and that’s how fans from both clubs proudly describe themselves. Both terms have been used freely among fans for years and are not in any way considered derogatory. The origins of both words have been widely discussed - even beyond Spain, and sometimes with different theories to how they came about. Barcelona’s bums on seats In the case of the Culés, the origin of the name is relatively clear. It dates back to the club’s early days when the team played at their first proper stadium.  Barça was founded in November 1899 and spent their first season playing at the Velódromo de la Bonanova  - on a pitch which they rented and shared with neighbours, FC Catalán, a club which was...

Who did Real Madrid and Barcelona players vote for at the FIFA Best Awards?

Image
As tends to be the case with individual awards, results have generated plenty of debate. In particular with regard to the choices of the footballers and managers themselves. Barcelona and formerly Spain captain Sergio Busquets voted for his ex-Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi first, before choosing his current colleague Robert Lewandowski, and Karim Benzema third. The Polish captain put Messi first, Mbappe second and Luka Modric third. Meanwhile their opponent on Thursday, Modric, put teammate Benzema first, followed by Messi and Kylian Mbappe as Croatia captain. According Marca. three people put Vinicius Junior down as the best player in the world, journalists from Cameroon and the Solomon Islands, alongside Mohamed Salah. Meanwhile David Alaba received disgraceful abuse online for placing Messi ahead of Benzema and Mbappe in his list, leading to the Austrian captain putting out a statement on his Instagram. Finally, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente raised many an eyebrow with his...

Veteran renewal at Barcelona postponed following Almeria debacle

Image
Barcelona were due to announce the contract renewal of Sergi Roberto today, but the decision has been delayed due to their defeat against Almeria on Sunday. According to MD, the contract was due to be signed today, but will now take place towards the end of the week or at the start of the next week. They say the news comes from sources close to the player himself, who has agreed to a new one-year contract with an option for a further year beyond that. Presumably Barcelona are keen to announce the renewal at a more positive moment, with the side under pressure and facing Real Madrid onn Thursday. Xavi Hernandez has spoken previously about the criticism of Roberto in the media and online, calling it some of the most unjust he has ever seen. It also goes to show the major impact that public opinion has at Barcelona. While their democratic system makes all matters inherently political, it is stark that public relations plays such a role in the timing of the announcement.
